Cap sure knows how to ruin a moment, doesn’t he?
Luckily, there were few, if any, ruined moments at Wizard World Philadelphia last weekend. Here’s a few highlights…
Dylan, Age 11
So, last year, Dylan’s parents brought him to Wizard World Philly, and they bought a copy of The Webcomics Handbook from me. This year, they were back. To show me Dylan’s own website — FJ Comics. Go check it out. The kid is going to be one to watch in comics very, very soon. Look at this. He’s ELEVEN…
Mick, age unknown
I also ran into Mick. I remember talking to Mick at comic conventions from years past, and he’s bought a few of my books. Now he’s selling his own. Needless to say, I needed a copy for myself.
My first sale today,
was to freaking Brad Guigar!

Meredith Moriarty
After my Webcomics Workshop panel, a young woman walked up and asked if I did portfolio reviews. Internally, I rolled my eyes. Not because I don’t want to give someone my opinions on their work, but because I always seem to get too honest and end up hurting their feelings. I warned her that this might be the case, and then I looked at her comic, Third Shift Society.
The meanest, nastiest, cruelest thing I could say about this comic is that I’m sad there isn’t more of it — and more like it on the Web. Gorgeously drawn, tautly written… and a pumpkin-head character named Ichabod. What’s not to love? Strongly recommended.
Meanwhile, over in D.C….
Ryan, Lar and the Blind Ferret gang had a rather bizarre sighting…
A real sketchy guy
And then, there were the sketches. This one was one of my favorites.
The panels
I hosted two panels on how to do webcomics. I guested on a third about starting up a comics business. But my favorite panel of the weekend was the one that my two sons and I did about podcasting with your kids. We talked a little bit about podcasting from a how-to standpoint, and then we called up the youngsters in the audience and recorded our own podcast (which will be uploaded to the Hey Comics — Kids podcast feed soon)! We were joined by Stephen, Ryan, Dylan and Ian. We talked about movies, comics, book, games and more. It was a rollicking good time. I’m kicking myself for not getting photos, though.
Speaking of missed opportunities, I spent the entire weekend sitting next to comics great Howard Chaykin, but never really got a chance to talk with him. The guy was swamped with ardent admirers most of the time. And that stinks because I found out he was an assistant to the legendary Wally Wood, back in the day, and I was dying to ask him about that. Bah. maybe next time.
Unfortunately, “next time” isn’t going to be Chicago. Some family events have been scheduled for that same week, so I’m afraid my “maybe” has turned into a “no.” And that means that Philly was my last convention of the year.
Luckily, I went out on a high note!
Patreon
You know I couldn’t make a blog post without mentioning it. I’ve been experimenting with more rewards for my SFW backers, and I think I have a good one — I’m recording video of my drawing process, and posting it for my $5+ backers. Now you can watch as I fumble my way through a composition. Join us, won’t you?
