Saying goodbye is hard to do when your mouth is full.

Courting Disaster Uncensored

It’s been a while since I posted an Uncensored Courting Disaster cartoon, so here’s a smutty scene to steam your screen. You know the Courting Disaster motto — you’ll laugh your pants off. Later today, my Patreon backers will see the next full-page Evil Inc After Dark — a NSFW comic series that appears there exclusively.

Evil Inc Vol. 10… I need your opinions!

graphic-novelization_processAs I begin to ship copies of Evil Inc Vol. 9 to my Kickstarter backers, I’m thinking ahead to the tenth Evil Inc book — and beyond. And I’m stuck with a dilemma.

Vol. 9 includes strips through May 2012. At 112 pages, it contains about a year-and-a-half of comic strips reformatted to a graphic-novel presentation (click the graphic to the right to see an infographic that explains the process).

Therefore, it’s going to take me three more volumes to get caught up. And I’m really anxious to get caught up because 2016’s comics — post reboot — are written and drawn to be a graphic novel. They read better in that format, and they look awesome — just ask my Patreon backers who have access to Evil Inc in its full-page format.

I think it’s very strong work, and I’m anxious to get it into print.

Doing a triple-sized graphic novelization of strips for Vol. 10 has some serious flaws — not the least of which are (1) a triple-sized price tag (2) a triple-sized reformatting job.

Waiting three-to-four years to put out all three graphic novels containing this new work isn’t particularly attractive either.

And neither is the idea of simply ending the Evil Inc graphic-novel series with Vol. 9 and then launching “The NEW Evil Inc” with the work from 2016.

However there’s one option that seems to be a pretty good compromise — a double-sized book (a little over 200 pages) that collects the work from June 2012 through the end of 2015 in its original comic-strip format.

And that’s where I need your opinion:

Would you be in favor of a double-sized Vol. 10 that collected Evil Inc if it collected the strips themselves (instead of re-formatting them as a graphic novel, the way volumes 1 through 9 did)?

What I’m watching: Sex in the Comix (Netflix)

This documentary, hosted by the inimitable Molly Crabapple, examines a topic that has recently become near-and-dear to my heart: Sex in comics. It interviews a wide range of cartoonists who work in erotica, including R. Crumb and Milo Manara. It goes through the history of erotic comics  (starting with the Tijuana Bibles) and examines some of the issues and controversies involved with doing NSFW work. It’s currently on Netflix (here in the U.S.).

From Webcomics.com

Webcomics-dot-com_red_WHere’s a recent topic from Webcomics.com — a site I publish with tutorials, advice and information for independent cartoonists ($30/year. $5/month).

Remember that scene in The Graduate, in which Mr. McGuire pulls Benjamin (played by a young Dustin Hoffman) aside to give him some life advice?

Mr. McGuire: I want to say one word to you. Just one word

Benjamin: Yes, sir.

Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?

Benjamin: Yes, I am.

Mr. McGuire: Plastics.

Benjamin: Exactly how do you mean?

Mr. McGuire: There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it?

My father-in-law, having read about a global colored-pencil shortage, has taken on the same demeanor. But when he pulls me aside, it isn’t “plastics.” Instead, it’s…

Coloring books.”

Coloring books targeted towards grown-up have become very popular recently. In fact, according to the article my father-in-law read in The Independent, they’re responsible for a global shortage in high-quality colored pencils. (To be fair, some other sources are adding a bit of nuance to that statement.)

Nonetheless, adult coloring books are the hot thing among twenty- and thirty-somethings.

So… should you be releasing a coloring book — perhaps one based on your comic? [READ MORE!]
