Good news! The Kickstarter campaign for the two NSFW book collections reached its funding goal in under a week! I’ve announced the first Stretch Goal — a third print collection! This one collects the NSFW commissions I created for my Patreon backers!

Alex Heberling is Kickstarting ‘The Hues, Vol III — Ember’

You know her as the colorist of Evil Inc and my other comics, but she’s also an a-ma-zing cartoonist in her own right. And her comic, The Hues, is Kickstarting its third rollicking book! Go check out the rewards she’s got set up. It’s a fantastic opportunity to stock up on her stuff!

Patreon

Patrons at the $10 level (and higher) will be able to access the 250+ NSFW comics I’ve been creating exclusively for Patreon. This includes:

  • Evil Inc After Dark — full-length comics  featuring some of your favorite characters
  • Uncensored Courting Distaster: All of the fun of Courting Disasterwith none of the restrictions!
  • NSFW commissions: Patrons get special pricing on commissions. You describe the scene, and I draw it.
  • Sketches, pin-ups, and much, much more!

My Patreon backers have been privy to a super spicy spectacle of exclusives — from Evil Inc After Dark to some caliente commissions (like the uncensored Courting Disaster cruelly cropped above).

The Complete Tales from the Con’ is a hit!

One of the distinct joys of exhibiting at the 15th annual Emerald City Comicon was signing the very first copies of The Complete Tales From The Con (AmazonImage Comics | Diamond Code JAN170796)! This bad boy hit the shelves a few days prior to the convention. ECCC arranged to have exclusive variant-cover copies of the book available for sale at the show!

What they’re saying

We’ve already gotten some very friendly reviews!

From Outright Geekery:

“The art is really true to the original characters, the colors pop and you can tell a vast amount of effort went into it. It really is fanboy made, and one has to appreciate this. …A must for all con-goers!”

From Comic Crusaders:

“While there is plenty of material about fans, there is a viewpoint from the other side of the creator table that is refreshing for me as a fan. Everything from collectibles, cosplay, commissions, food, and fans get attention, as well as material specifically about the heroes and villains we love taking part in observational comedy. I love conventions large and small, so seeing the ridiculous truths put on page is a very fun read. …and at under ten bucks I personally think it’s a bargain.”

We made Heather’s Staff Pick over at Rouges Portal:

“Most of the panels played straight into my love for meta, while some were just a little too real. Like, we all know the fanboy dripping water all over original artwork at a booth is totally not cool. The collection offers quips about cosplay and insight about comments being made on the other side of the table. Creators, we know sometimes you hate us fanboys and fangirls – but we thank you for what you do anyhow.”

Heather… I talked to the others. Nobody hates you. We all think you’re swell.

About ‘TFTC’

Four-and-a-half years ago, I began writing TFTC, a weekly comic for the Emerald City Comicon website. As I mentioned on Webcomics.com, it was an idea that I wanted to put into action for a long time. And ECCC’s Jim Demonakos was giving me the opportunity to do so — in a big way. I started writing the weekly strips which were originally drawn by Chris Giarusso (and later Scoot McMahon) in December of 2011. Tales from the Con focused on the weird, funny, odd stuff that happens at comic conventions — with a healthy dollop of general comics-culture humor.

The OTHER supervillain-comic Kickstarter you should be supporting…

Sometimes you run across a Kickstarter campaign that you can’t help but promote. And Aiden Casserly’s next Scapula book fits right into that category. Check out the rewards. They’re just too good to pass up. And the book itself looks marvelous. Get your rewards now!

Patreon

We’ve been having an incredible month over at Patreon! Join us! Along with all of the usual NSFW fun, I’ve started posting a special series of comics similar to the now-ended Tales From The Con series. Best of all, this series is available to everyone pledging as little as $1/month! Thumbnails below.

Patreon

There’s lots of great stuff on tap at the Evil Inc Patreon page! More Evil Inc After Dark — a NSFW full-page comic series based in the Evil Inc universe. Plus NSFW commissions, Courting Disaster Uncensored, and much more! Cruelly cropped above is a few panels from the most recent CDu.

Oh… and I like to spring little surprises on my patrons that aren’t part of the posted rewards. For example, all of my patrons ($1+) have been getting bonus cartoons every week for the past four weeks — like the one below. That’s a trend that’s going to continue for the foreseeable. And next week my $10+ backers are in for a surprise bonus!

The moment you make your pledge, you have access to more than 700 exclusive posts — including 300+ NSFW posts. That includes comics, cartoons, sketches, stories and bonuses from other popular Patreon creators! Since January of last year, my rate has been about one update a day, on average. See for yourself. Here’s a roundup of how previous months in 2016 broke down: January… February… MarchApril… June… JulyAugustSeptOctNovDec… and in 2017January and February

Kickstarter

Having met our Kickstarter goal in the first week, we’re well on our way to the first Stretch Goal. At $20k, everyone who orders a physical book will get a free bonus — a 56-page comic book that collects the NSFW commissions I did on Patreon. Earlier this week I announced that Kickstarter supporters could increase their pledges and apply the extra money to some of the many add-ons that will be available at the end of the campaign. Later, I announced an entire list of digital add-ons.

When the campaign ends, I’ll be using Backerkit to open up a storefront. This will enable people to add items to their order a la carte — for example, if they’d like to add one of the Evil Inc Annual Reports to their package. Doing this now helps us reach the Stretch Goal. And that means that adding one book to your order might mean you receive an additional book for free!

Join our Kickstarter campaign now and get some truly awesome rewards!

 Alex Heberling’s Kickstarter

You know her as the colorist of Evil Inc and my other comics, but she’s also an a-ma-zing cartoonist in her own right. And her comic, The Hues, is Kickstarting its third rollicking book! Go check out the rewards she’s got set up. It’s a fantastic opportunity to stock up on her stuff!

The Hues Volume 3: EMBER will be a beautiful, full-color graphic novel totaling about 120 pages. Collecting chapters 7 through 10 of the webcomic, Volume 3 will cover Lauren’s encounter with two new magical girls– Salime and Audrey– and her attempts to reunite with Sami, Andy, and Hannah back at their home base.

This book will also include an awesome Guest Art gallery– with full-color illustrations of the Hues by some really fantastic cartoonists!

Kickstarter!

We’re in the last days of the Kickstarter campaign for the first Evil Inc After Dark book! And we’re closing in fast on the Stretch Goal — which adds a free comic for everyone who orders a print edition of either of the two books being launched!

Aaaaand, one of the best ways to help us reach that goal is to consider an Add-on! Just add some extra money to your order — don’t change your reward tier — and you can apply that extra money to purchasing any of the available books — that includes Evil Inc After Dark, Courting Disaster Uncensored, the NSFW Commissions comic (if we reach our goal), as well as any of the earlier Evil Inc and Courting Disaster books.* How much should you add? Here’s the pricing for print books … and for digital books. And here’s a step-by-step guide to increasing your pledge to accommodate an add-on!

*The original nine Evil Inc books and the three Courting Disaster books contain no NSFW content.

You wanna write?

I’ve added a new reward to the campaign — you get to write an Evil Inc After Dark story! And it’s limited to only two lucky scribes!

You’ll get both books — EVIL INC AFTER DARK and COURTING DISASTER UNCENSORED (and the NSFW COMMISSION comic if we reach $20k).

YOU get to write a 4-page story (about 36 panels) that I will illustrate as an Evil Inc After Dark comic. Here are the details:

  • It will *not* appear in this book. (I’m just not that fast!)
  • You will get a digital version of the completed story
  • It may appear on my Patreon page, exclusively for Patreon backers *
  • It may appear in any future Evil Inc After Dark books *
  • You will be credited on the piece as the writer — with your own name or under a pen name
  • I reserve the right to edit for content/length
  • No minors, bestiality, non-consent, etc.

If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with me!

*…at my discretion

Original Art

One of the most satisfying parts of my monthly routine is when I get to package up original art for my $20+ backers on Patreon. We’ve got close to twenty patrons at  that level now. Every third consecutive pledge brings each of them another original from the Evil Inc comic strip. A few weeks back, I ran into a couple who had been buying originals from me for years — and who now support the Patreon campaign so they can get originals that way. They were kind enough to show me how some of the pieces look matted-and-framed and hanging on the wall.

I couldn’t have been prouder. I asked if I could share the photos with you, and they kindly agreed. Enjoy!

Untold stories from Emerald City Comicon…

From my personal Facebook Page

I was standing at the urinal of the Philadelphia International Airport when a man walked up behind me, put a hand on my shoulder, and said: “It’s gonna be OK.”

He was wrong.

As soon as I had a free hand, I checked my wallet. It was still there. I was relieved that I hadn’t been pick-pocketed.

I was wrong.

I caught my flight to Seattle, had a fantastic time at Emerald City Comicon, and returned home. About a week after that fateful day in the men’s room, I opened my bank account to see that there were about a half-dozen gift-card purchases — ranging between $200 and $400 — pending on the account. I called my bank and sounded the alarm. Somehow, someone had gotten hold of my debit-card information!

The next day I checked the account to see additional charges to my account — including a $1600 charge to “CAESAR’S PLACE” in Las Vegas. (Most of the gift-card charges seemed to be located in Nevada.)

Then the truth smacked me like a fist to the nose — or a hand to the shoulder.

The guy in the restroom must have had a scanner that enabled him to steal the information off my debit card — just by standing next to me!

My bank — PNC — was able to block most of the pending gift-card charges before they hit my account. They assured me I had fraud protection through Visa. As of today, I have received provisional credits on all of the fraudulent charges (about $3000 total).

But I didn’t waste time. I bought a new RFID-protected wallet that protects my cards from scanners. And one for my wife.

I hope whomever went to Vegas on my dime lost their shirt.

Er… my shirt.

And I have a new rule.

From now on… anyone who gets too close to me in the men’s room is walking out wet.

Binwin’s Minions

Recently, my friend Scott Kurtz left Acquisitions Inc. to strike out on a new creative pursuit — Binwin’s Minions. If you’re not familiar with the podcast, it’s kind of like listening in on a D&D campaign being played among some of the funniest people you’d ever want to meet. They performed — live — at PAX East recently, and the audio is pure gold. Just listen:

Kickstarter!

With an entire week left before the end of the campaign, we reached the $20k Stretch Goal that ensures that everyone who orders a print edition of Evil Inc After Dark or Courting Disaster Uncensored (or both) will get a copy of the 56-page comic-book collection of NSFW commissioned illustrations!

Ask any of my Patreon backers. These illos are hot. I think you’re gonna love ’em.

So… now, it’s on to $25k…

New Stretch Goal — HARDCOVERS

It was the first question many of you asked me when I launched the Kickstarter — and I heard it from several people when I was discussing the book at Emerald City Comicon…

“Is it a hardcover?”

Here’s our chance. At $25k,  everyone who orders a print edition of Evil Inc After Dark will be automatically upgraded to a hardcover copy of that book!

This campaign has averaged more than $800 a day. And we have seven days to reach the new Stretch Goal. This is very much within reach.

If you’re getting only EiAD or CDu, consider upping your pledge to include the other book. Since we’ve passed the $20k, mark, you’re going to end up with three books by the time the dust settles! And one of those could be a handsome hardcover!

There’s also print add-ons and digital add-ons. If you do consider an add-on, be sure you don’t change your reward! I have step-by-step instructions, in case you need ’em.

And, as always, every Like, Share, Comment, Retweet and Favorite helps me to spread the message even further. You guys have been amazing at that — and this Kickstarter’s success shows it!

Commissions

And speaking of commissions, there are only three rewards featuring commissions left:

$200 — commissioned illustration / digital (you also get all three books and PDFs)

$300 — commissioned illustration / inked (you also get all three books and PDFs)

$500 — You write a 4-page Evil Inc After Dark story and I draw it (you also get all three books and PDFs)

Patreon

Aaaaaaand March is shaping up to be a great month on Patreon. We had a lull — I lost a few days to Emerald City Comicon and both Alex and I launched Kickstarters this month — but we’re catching up quick! Tuesday saw an all-new Evil Inc After Dark, yesterday was a NSFW Courting Disaster, and today… BONUS REWARD. I can’t tell you much, but I can tell you it’s very NSFW and it involves a collaboration between me and Cecilia Tan of Circlet Press.

Yeah. It’s that good.

And tomorrow… another NSFW full-page Evil Inc After Dark!

What They’re Sayin’

“One of your sexiest pages yet (although as a LL fan I’m slightly biased)…”

“At the very least someone’s going to have a little Irish in them!”

This is gonna be a huge week. There’s a lot going on — Kickstarter, Patreon, a new Patreon-exclusive comic series that’s  _not_ NSFW, and a very important announcement on conventions. So let’s get started…

Kickstarter

If you follow me on Twitter (or follow Evil Inc on Facebook), you’ve heard me talk (a lot) about the Kickstarter campaign for the print collection of Evil Inc After Dark — along with a Courting Disaster Uncensored book. As ambitious as it was to try to Kickstart two books at the same time, I actually ended up launching three. At the $20k mark, my backers unlocked a 56-page comic that collects many of the NSFW illustrations I’ve done on Patreon.

This is the last week of the campaign, and we’re well on our way to $25k. At that Stretch Goal, everyone who orders an Evil Inc After Dark book will be automatically upgraded to a hardcover copy of the book.

Patreon

Of course, none of the above would be possible without Patreon. If you’d like a sneak preview of some of the stuff we’ll be collecting into books, this is the perfect time to join us!

Why? Because you’ll get a bunch of rewards without waiting all month for them! You’ll get yours at the beginning of next week!

So, here’s the deal. I post new content in my Patreon feed all through the month. And you have access to that as soon as you pledge.

BUT…

I send my backers links to entire folders full of the NSFW content — broken down by category — as soon as the payments are processed in the first couple days of each month. One folder has all of the Evil Inc After Dark pages, in order. Another folder has all of the NSFW commissions. Another has all of the Courting Disaster comics, and so forth.

It’s a snazzy reading experience, and it’s a great way to view only the material you’re in the mood for.

If you pledge before the end of the month, however, you’re not going to have to wait long at all to get access to these categorized folders of NSFW goodness! I’ll be distributing those as soon as the payments are processed.

And in those few days in between, you can still access all of the exclusive content by using the content tags to filter only the stuff you want to read right now!

There’s a lot to see —over 300 NSFW comics, cartoons, illustrations and illustrated stories! And I’m adding new content almost every day!

What they’re saying

Here’s a few remarks from the Patreon comments section…

“‘concupiscent celestial corsairs’ Well done sir.”

— M.K.

“I like where this is going…”

— C.

“OOoohhh, tentacles…”

— N.R.

“One of your sexiest pages yet
(although as a LL fan I’m slightly biased)”

— R.R.

Bonus Reward — “Like a Mask Removed”

My Patreon backers deserved a little Something Special this month, so I arranged for them to get Like a Mask Removed from Circlet Press — in EPUB, MOBI and PDF formats.

Circlet Press has a Patreon page , too. I’m a patron, and their rewards are tremendous!

Like a Mask Removed

Like a Mask Removed, volume one: Erotic Tales of Superheroes presents seven stories ranging from vibrant and lively romps reminiscent of the colorful comic book pages they are inspired by to modern experimental literary styles.

Table of Contents

Switch by Rae Flowers
Partners by Michael M. Jones
Star Crossed by David Hubbard
Times Square Alter Ego by Bianca Sinn
Merboy At Midnight by Tom Cardamone
Lawman by Angela Caperton
A Double-Edged Bomb by Lauren P. Burka

Circlet Press

Circlet Press  is a publishing house founded by erotica writer Cecilia Tan. It specializes in science-fiction erotica, a once-uncommon genre, and its publications often feature BDSM themes.

Cape Carnival

For the last five weeks, I’ve been doing special bonus comics for all of my Patreon backers ($1+). These are based on ideas that I would have typically sent over to Tales From the Con. But with that series at an end, I figured I’d do them exclusively for my Patreon backers — especially those who aren’t interested in NSFW comics! If you want to see a couple examples, click here and here.

Webcomics.com

Speaking of new projects that have been surprisingly popular, last week, I did a couple of 20-minute webcasts for the members of Webcomics.com. I take a few questions from other webcartoonists, and I talk about some issues that impact all of us — like Patreon, good editing, creativity, burnout, etc. This has proven to be extremely popular, and it’s something I’ll be doing more of in the future. If you’re working on a webcomic, you definitely want to subscribe to the site to see these videos and more.

…Plus you get to look around my studio. For example… see those books in the bottom-right-hand corner of the screen?

The Hues — Last Week!

Well, that’s Alex Heberling’s Kickstarter for her third Hues collection! She’s in her last week, too. This is a terrific time to help push this baby over the finish line — and get some fantastic rewards for yourself. Alex’s coloring is an integral part of all of my comics — Evil Inc, Evil Inc After Dark, Courting Disaster, etc. And she’s a phenomenal cartoonist in her own right. If you haven’t read her stuff yet, get all three books and treat yourself. I know you’re gonna love ’em.

Conventions

OK… it’s time for Real Talk. I’m making a fraction of the money I used to make at comic conventions. And I’m making more money — exponentially so — at crowdfunding efforts like Kickstarter and Patreon. So I’m making a pretty obvious decision — I’m not doing conventions anymore. Full stop.

You know how the Universe sometimes has a way of telling you things? That happened to me at the beginning of the month. My Kickstarter launched on the same day as my flight to Seattle for Emerald City Comicon. For the next four days, I sat at my Artist Alley table as people walked past — all the while, watching my phone deliver a steady stream of notifications… Kickstarter pledges, new Patreon backers, commission requests, etc.

And the longer I sat at that table, the further behind I was failing on delivering for those people who were paying money to support my comics.

My Patreon feed had a one-week slump as a result of that convention. Thankfully, I’ve been able to catch up. As you’ll see in this blog shortly, I will be able to report — once again — that I have delivered one exclusive Patreon post for every day in the month. And the volume of NSFW content in those posts is easily the same as it has been since the beginning of 2016.

But I’m not putting myself through that again. I lost two Patreon backers because they were dissatisfied with the frequency of NSFW posts. (I wish they’d have stayed just one more week.) But the message is clear: Doing conventions is bad for business. Sales are down (for me), travel is expensive, and I’m using time that should be used towards keeping my Kickstarter and Patreon people happy.

So if you’re used to seeing me at Wizard World Philadelphia. you’re going to be disappointed. I have no plans to go. All of the other shows that I’ve exhibited in the past are out, too — Baltimore, Ohio, New York, and yes, even next year’s show in Seattle.

That  may sound bitter. It’s not. It’s pretty realistic decision-making, and I’ve always tried to be straight with you guys about what I do. I’m definitely going to miss comic conventions, but I’m thankful that I have the crowdfunding support from a large number of readers that more than makes up for the flagging convention economy.

I’ve been doing webcomics since there were webcomics. I’ve seen the entire business turn 180 degrees. And I know that 360 isn’t out of the question. So this isn’t the end of comic-convention appearances (for me) — it’s merely a pause.

Five years ago, today…

…I announced that I was leaving my job at the Philadelphia Daily News to become a full-time cartoonist. Since that announcement seems to be lost to the sand of time, I’ll copy/paste the announcement I posted on Facebook here:

Today I’m leaving my job as a graphic artist for the Philadelphia Daily News to become a full-time cartoonist. It’s a huge change in my life, and my family’s life, and I’m super excited about it.

Last month, the newspaper announced layoffs, and — despite my 14 years’ seniority — the chances of my getting cut were pretty good. The day after they announced the layoffs, the company also announced a plan to combine the newsrooms of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News — switching to a “24/7” news organization that would be staffed around the clock.

Long-story-short(er): My current shift (4 p.m. – midnight, Sun. – Thurs.) could be changed, under the “24/7 newsroom” concept, several times throughout the year — both in times and days. My wife and I both work. Right now, she arrives home from work fifteen minutes before I have to leave to work my shift. I take the kids to school and pick them up. We’re barely touching all the bases as it is. And I go days without having a full conversation with my wife. Changing my shift throughout the year would have made it impossible for me to stay — in the event I hadn’t been laid off anyway.

The newspaper offered a generous buyout package for anyone who was willing to take a voluntary layoff. I’ve been working hard for over 12 years towards the goal of transitioning full-time to my career in comics. It just seemed like the right time to make the jump.

Incidentally, yesterday morning, shortly after confirming the 37 layoffs (voluntary and otherwise), the company that owns the Daily News announced plans for cutting yet another 35 positions.

“Evil Inc,” incidentally, will continue to run in the Daily News after my departure. The comic has a separate contract with the paper, and has not been effected by the layoffs. Next month, I will be celebrating my 11-year anniversary of having my daily comic strips published in the newspaper.

A lot of people have asked me if I’m scared about leaving the regular paycheck I was earning at the Daily News, and I can’t say that I’m not. But more than that fear, I’m absolutely charged with excitement over being able to devote time to the many projects I’ve been trying to find the time to do in the past few years. When you see what I have planned in the upcoming few months, I think you’ll see what I mean. This is going to be a phenomenal year.

And even more than that, it’s beginning to dawn on me that I’m going to have an actual life for the first time in 21 years. I won’t be working nights anymore. And I’m not going to miss holidays with my family. Newspaper life means getting Christmas Eve off, but not Christmas… and the same for Memorial Day and Labor Day and Thanksgiving and so on. It’s day-before; not day-of. And this will be the first time in 14 years that I won’t be working Sunday nights.

I’m more than a little stoked about that.

It’s going to be thrilling and scary and exhilarating and uncertain and new. And I’ve never been more ready for it.

Kickstarter ends tomorrow at noon!

The Kickstarter to launch THREE books collecting NSFW comics ends tomorrow at noon (EDT). And we’re thisclose to crossing the $25k mark — at which point all orders of the Evil Inc After Dark book will be automatically upgraded to a hardcover edition — for FREE!

If you’re curious about what the books contain, ask one of the 700+ Patreon backers who enjoy this stuff every month! Speaking of which…

The time is NOW

This is the BEST time to pledge to my Patreon page. Why? Because you’ll get a bunch of rewards without waiting all month for them! You’ll get yours at the beginning of next week!

So, here’s the deal. I post new content in my Patreon feed all through the month. And you have access to that as soon as you pledge.

There’s a lot to see —over 300 NSFW comics, cartoons, illustrations and illustrated stories! And I’m adding new content almost every day! In fact, by the end of this month, I will have uploaded 33 exclusive posts — more than half of which is NSFW content!

Be a $1 patron!

OK… so the NSFW comics don’t interest you. I get it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t support the comic and get cool stuff, too! Best of all, you’re never gonna notice one buck when it gets deducted from your card or Paypal account. But I’ll notice it. And it will help me continue to make the comics you read. Best of all, you get some cool rewards…

Desktop Wallpapers and Mobile Backgrounds

Every month, my patrons at the $1 level (and higher) start their months off right with a new desktop wallpaper featuring swanky Evil Inc art and some background images for their mobile devices. Here’s one of the recent wallpaper/background combos…

The Big Picture — Full-page Evil Incs!

Patrons at the $1 level (and higher) see the Evil Inc comics before anyone else. AND they get access to full-page versions of the comics! As you may have noticed, I’ve changed how I produce Evil Inc. These days, I’m creating a graphic novel that I release on the Web in partial-page installments. Usually, that means a half-page on Tuesday and a half-page on Thursday.

My patrons get to see the full-page versions before they get collected into the graphic novel. Click on the image below to see it even bigger!

Patreon by the Numbers

Despite a brief post-convention lag, I posted more Patreon-exclusive content in March (35 posts) than in any preceding month except December 2015 (40 posts). And nearly two-thirds of that was NSFW content!

(Nonetheless, I learned my lesson. As I stated here, I’m ending all future convention appearances so I can focus on Patreon and Kickstarter projects.)

Here’s what my backers got in March…

8 — (NSFW) sketches

6 — (NSFW) Courting Disaster

6 — Evil Inc previews

5 — Cape Carnival — my spin-off from Tales From The Con (details) for all patrons $1+.

3 — (NSFW) Evil Inc After Dark (full-page updates)

1 — (NSFW) Courtesy of Circlet Press, members got the 1188-page eBook Like a Mask Removed, containing seven erotic superhero stories (25k+ words).

Kickstarter

The Kickstarter campaign for three terrific tomes of titillating tales wrapped up Friday — with a grand total of $28,478 pledged by over 600 backers — funding the project at nearly 240%! Thank you to everyone who helped to make these three books possible!

ComixLaunch’s Tyler James was kind enough to interview me about webcomics — and how nearly everything has changed since webcomics started. It’s a brisk talk that I think you’ll enjoy. We talk about advertising, Kickstarter, Patreon, and much more!

Since I’ve added some new exclusive features particularly at the $1 level — here’s a chart that shows everything you’ll get for backing me on Patreon at different monthly levels. As always, you can change — or even cancel — your pledge at any time after the end of the first month. Here’s a look at everything my Patreon peeps got last month.

Cape Carnival

One of the new features listed in the $1 tier is Cape Carnival. If you liked Tales From the Con, the comic I wrote for Emerald City Comicon, this is my own spin-off — now that TFTC has ended. If you want to see a couple examples, click here and here. And there’s a new Cape Carnival comic scheduled to hit today!

Patreon

I’m following up March — which had more exclusive posts than any other month except December 2015 — determined to continue to surprise my backers in April. With today’s post, I will have 11 for the month — not bad for the 7th. And over half of them have been NSFW content.

This is a great time to join! New storylines are about to start in Evil Inc After Dark — including some crossovers from the central Evil Inc comic. And I have a few NSFW bonuses in mind, as well.

Kickstarter

If you were a Kickstarter backer — and if your reward included an entry in the List of Supporters, then you need to read this Update for some important information.

Patreon

I announced that I nearly broke my high score for exclusive Patreon posts in March. The only month I posted more exclusives was Dec. 2015. And I’m determined to keep the ball rolling in April. So far, as of today (April 11) I will have uploaded 15 posts — including NSFW favorites like Evil Inc After Dark, Courting Disaster, and more!

And, the minute you join, you have access to over 300 NSFW exclusives that I’ve been posting since 2015!

If NSFW comics isn’t your thing, try the $1 pledge.

You’ll get early access to all of the Evil Inc comics, full-page views of the comic, and a weekly Cape Carnival comic!

If you liked Tales From the Con, the comic I wrote for Emerald City Comicon, this is my own spin-off — now that TFTC has ended.

If you want to see a couple examples, click here and here. And there’s a new Cape Carnival comic every week!

Webcomics Confidential

In the latest Webcomics Confidential — a webcast exclusively for members of Webcomics.com — I talk about some common promotion failures that webcartoonists practice every day. More importantly, I offer some solid advice on doing self-promotion that works.

Comic Book Pitt

Thank you to Comic Book Pitt for interviewing me for their site. They asked me about the past, present and future of comics. From the interview:

What got you into comics?

“My newspaper comics section. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the ability to create a funny story in three or four panels. I remember pouring over strips like Beetle Bailey, Broom Hilda, Animal Crackers and Drabble. When I got a little older, Berke Breathed’s Bloom County bowled me over. In college, I had a subscription to the Detroit Free Press solely for the purpose of reading that strip.

My first comic strip, Greystone Inn, was heavily influenced by Breathed’s work — and I think it shows. I wanted so badly to capture that spirit.”

To read the entire interview, click here.

Kleefield on Comics

Speaking of very kind words, Sean Kleefeld had this to say over on FreakSugar:

Brad Guigar debuted his first webcomic, Greystone Inn, back in 2000. Like many webcomikers just starting out, he maintained a full-time job while working on the strip. Even when he ended Greystone Inn and began Evil, Inc. in 2005, he kept working at The Philadelphia Daily News until 2012, when he finally left the paper and became a full-time webcomiker. So while he wasn’t doing webcomics in the earliest days of the medium, he’s been around long enough to know a thing or two.

And fortunately for many people, he has been very generous with what he’s learned over the years. Not only has he written more books on webcomics than anyone else (one full solo book, and one he contributed heavily to—which doesn’t sound like much, but considering only five webcomics books have been written, he makes up for a good percentage!) but he provides an ongoing stream of advice on Webcomics.com as well as in any number of interviews, convention panels, and the like.

I mention all this because, while I sit here and write from a somewhat removed perspective, Guigar is in the trenches figuring all of this out for himself. He’s focusing on what works for him, of course, and his bias naturally skews towards that, but he’s very upfront about how what works for him may or may not work for anyone else.

Read the entire piece on FreakSugar.

Get a Move On!

Evil Inc colorist Alex Heberling is taking a break from moving readers with her outstanding work, and she’s taking a little time to move herself. As you probably know, packing up and moving is a tremendous pain in the keister. You can help take the sting out — and help yourself to some great stuff — by hitting her online store. She’s got a fantastic sale going on right now, so it’s a win-win!

Patreon

There’s a lot going on over at the ol‘ Patreon page this month. If you remember, when Lightning Lady and Marquis the henchman went on a date, their got heated very quick and the Evil Inc storyline jumped over to Evil Inc After Dark for its continuation.

That storyline just wrapped up last week, and so did a major storyline from Captain Scarr and concupiscent celestial corsairs.

And that means a new storyline kicks off this week — one that I think you’re going to love.

And look for another Evil Inc storyline to jump over to After Dark very soon.

Maybe even more than once.

Bonuses — NSFW and SFW!

Plus, I’m very proud to bring my patrons some surprise bonuses! For my NSFW backers, it’s a delightfully decadent drama that delves into an after-death dalliance with … Amelia Earhart?? It appears courtesy of K.B.Spangler, who you probably already know as the creator of the popular webcomic A Girl and Her Fed.

K.B. has been creating comics for well over 10 years — and has been a favorite of mine since the very beginning. Spangler’s art and writing are top-notch — and we share a perverse predilection for the underestimated brilliance of puns. Spangler’s Patreon page offers a wide range of tremendous rewards. Not only do Spangler’s $5+ Patreon backers get a daily dose of pun-ishment, but $10+ supporters have access to some truly inventive NSFW content (as my backers will will shortly find out).

And for my SFW Stalwarts…

…there’s another Cape Carnival comic carving up the comic-book cape-and-cowl clique. If you were a fan of Tales from The Con — which I wrote for Emerald City Comicon — you’ll love this weekly comic.

This is just part of the rewards you get for a measly buck a month.

Not over yet

Oh… and we’re not even through with the April bonuses yet. Nope.

Webcomics Confidential

In the sixth episode of Webcomics Confidential, I tackle a couple questions from viewers. First up: After I devoted 30 minutes to explaining why I’ve come to the decision that comic conventions are a net loss for the typical webcartoonist, one viewer asks if small cons are better for indie creators. It’s a little like that joke where the kid asks, “Can I do it til I need glasses?” Next, we talk about Patreon backers who don’t stay past their first pledge. Guess what? It’s OK. Nobody should be asking for long-term commitments on Patreon. On the other hand, your content should be so good they don’t even consider leaving. Go to Webcomics.com for the full video. So… where ya from?…

After a larger-than-normal influx of Patreon patrons last month, I launched a poll to find out where people had found out about my Patreon page. I thought that, perhaps, my Kickstarter had generated some extra interest… or one of the interviews I had participated in.

Nope. It turns out you folks are coming from… right here.

So it seems my provocative promotional prose procured a plethora of patrons! It’s that or my alliteration.

Patreon

There’s lots of great stuff on tap at the Evil Inc Patreon page! More Evil Inc After Dark — a NSFW full-page comic series based in the Evil Inc universe. Plus NSFW commissions, Courting Disaster, and much more! Cruelly cropped above is recent Courting Disaster.

Oh… and for my $1+ backers, I’ve been posting a NEW weekly feature called Cape Carnival. If you liked Tales from the Con, you’ll get a kick out of Cape Carnival.  Here’s one of my favorites…

The moment you make your pledge, you have access to more than 700 exclusive posts — including 300+ NSFW posts. That includes comics, cartoons, sketches, stories and bonuses from other popular Patreon creators! Since January of last year, my rate has been about one update a day, on average. See for yourself. Here’s a roundup of how previous months in 2016 broke down: January… February… MarchApril… June… JulyAugustSeptOctNovDec… and in 2017JanuaryFebruary and March

Get your access to this treasure-trove of fun now!

What they’re saying

I posted a bonus reward for my $10+ patrons — a supernatural erotic romp by KB Spangler, and the response was brisk.

“This was an awesome read!”

— R.G.

“Fun and sexy! ”

— R.G.

The Evil Inc After Dark storyline that elaborated on the date between Marquis the Henchman and Lightning Lady ended with a gang of alternate-universe Lightning Ladies (and -Men) joining the party.

“I assume the Lightning powers is like an aphrodisiac in the multiverse…”

— T.

“Takes sex with yourself to a whole new level”

— M. H.

“Looks like a Alt-Lightning Lady/Lad orgy is about to commence… and doesn’t that have some interesting permutational possibilities?”

Cruelly cropped above is a panel from the brand-spankin’ new Evil Inc After Dark storyline that kicked off this week. This has been shaping up to be a fantastic month on Patreon. So far, in April, I’ve posted more than one exclusive Patreon post for every day of the month. This includes…

My April Fool’s joke…  “Greystone Inn After Dark”…

A spicy desktop wallpaper/mobile background package featuring a Courting Disaster cartoon I’m proud of…

Some new Courting Disaster comics (like the one previewed on the right.

New full-page Evil Inc comics.

NSFW sketches.

Ghostly erotica from KB Spangler’s Patreon page.

New Cape Carnival cartoons.

A 50%-off coupon for “Like A Mask Removed, Vol 2.” Patreon backers already got “LAMR Vol. 1” for free from Circlet Press. Volume Two features five smutty super-villain stories that Evil Inc readers are sure to savor.

Previews of Evil Inc comics.

The conclusion of this Evil Inc After Dark storyline that branched off from Lightning Lady’s date with a henchman that started here.

Plus… the minute you pledge, you get access to over 700 exclusive posts — 300+ of which as NSFW. And that includes…

Capt. Scarr’s space-pirate crew….

Courting Disaster…

And NSFW commissioned illustrations!

It’s a great time to join us and get instant access to over 300 NSFW comics, illustrations and more.

Cape Carnival

If you’re not interested in the NSFW work, I’ve added something this month that you might enjoy! These cartoons will be available for all of my backers ($1/month and higher).

With Tales From The Con coming to its end, I find that I have a lot of ideas that I would have typically funneled into that project. For a good indication of what I’m talking about, you can read the TFTC archive at the Emerald City Comicon* Web site. The only difference is that while I only wrote those, I will be writing and drawing this new series.

These cartoons skewer mainstream superhero comics and tropes. I’ll be posting one every week for the next several weeks to see if there’s any interest.

This will be like everything else I’ve done through Patreon. If it has solid support, I’ll continue it. If not, I’ll move on to something that earns more fan support.

If you’ve ever considered joining my Patreon for as little as $1 a month — and join a cadre of well over 700 fans of Evil Inc — then you now have an added incentive.

As always, you’re free to cancel any time after the first pledge is processed at the beginning of next month.

Webcomics Confidential

In Episode 7 of Webcomics Confidential, I make a startling realization — webcartoonists (some of us) are going through the Five Stages of Grief with the decreased role comic conventions play in our lives. And a big part of that is because so many of us relied on cons for affirmation…

There’s a lot to see —almost 300 NSFW comics, cartoons, illustrations and illustrated stories! And I’m adding new content almost every day!

— G.J.F.

If you’re not interested in the NSFW work, I’m adding something this month that you might enjoy! These cartoons will be available for all of my backers ($1/month and higher).

Continued on Patreon

Today’s Evil Inc comic will be continued — later todayexclusively on Patreon! This is going to happen repeatedly during this storyline — which is something I envisioned when I first starting doing Evil Inc After Dark in 2015.

In short, you will be able to read the “regular” Evil Inc comic without the After Dark interludes. You won’t be confused as the story goes forward — all of the pertinent plot points will be there.

Reading the After Dark segments will just add a little spice to the storyline.

Preorders are now open!

So, did you find out about the Kickstarter for the new Evil Inc After Dark book too late? Or maybe you wanted to participate, but it just wasn’t in the budget that month? Good news! The pre-order store is now open, and you can pick up that book, along with Courting Disaster Uncensored, any of the previous Evil Inc graphic novels and the Courting Disaster collections!

TimeSuck

The boys and I have discovered a new podcast to listen to on our drive to and from school — Timesuck by comedian Dan Cummins.

Every week, Cummins selects a topic and follows it down the rabbit hole — The Mandela Effect, the Jim Jones Massacre, Flat Earth Theory, and so on.

The topics are weird and fascinating (like the inaugural Lizard Illuminati episode), and Dan’s delivery is honed by years of successful stand-up comedy. But here’s what I love about this guy — and why I listen to it with my kids:

He makes it cool to be curious.

In an age that veers dangerously towards anti-intellectualism, it’s pretty awesome to hear a guy who gets giddy over research — and proud to do it well. And when someone offers an opposing viewpoint, he’s downright eager to embrace that angle, devour it, and then decide for himself.

It’s everything I want my two boys to embrace.
