Honest Lou’s Exterminating

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you already saw this, but I’ve got to share.

My younger son, Max, is enrolling in a bicycling program in West Philly. As we were finding parking for his first day, we discovered Honest Lou’s Exterminating. The exterior of Honest Lou’s features hand-painted advertising vignettes that are — in my opinion — the shining apex of bare-knuckle marketing at its finest.

In a visual presentation that harkens back to the circus sideshow, one panel shows a terrified child with tears streaming down their face, as rats climb along the outside of their crib. Alongside, a uniformed, mustachioed pest-control technician marches alongside 8-inch letters that exclaim: THE BUG STOPS HERE and BUG BIRTH CONTROL CENTER.

And you wonder why I love Philadelphia.

With Tales From The Con coming to its end, I find that I have a lot of ideas that I would have typically funneled into that project. For a good indication of what I’m talking about, you can read the TFTC archive at the Emerald City Comicon* Web site. The only difference is that while I only wrote those, I will be writing and drawing this new series.

These cartoons skewer mainstream superhero comics and tropes. I’ll be posting one every week for the next several weeks to see if there’s any interest.

This will be like everything else I’ve done through Patreon. If it has solid support, I’ll continue it. If not, I’ll move on to something that earns more fan support.

In case you missed the Kickstarter update for my three new NSFW collections, the books are on their way from the printer! They’re scheduled to arrive on August 15th. After I get them safely stored in my warehouse space, I will begin shipping. To help alleviate the wait for backers who ordered Artist Editions, I’m drawing as many of those as I can in advance on bookplate that will be glued to the insides of the AE books.

Patreon backers have been getting advance looks at some of them — both the SFW and NSFW illustrations. In fact, you can see an Artist Edition illo of Desi above!

’Ringo Awards

Nominations for the Best Webcomic category of the inaugural ’Ringo Awards will end in a few days. It’s open to the public, so make your voice heard!

As I reported on Webcomics.com, after Reed Expo bought the Harvey Awards (without having, it seems, any plans to actually do anything with the property), Baltimore Comic Con announced the launch of the Ringo Awards (honoring Mike Wieringo, a well-known Marvel/DC artist who died in 2007).

Evil Inc After Dark

July is shaping up to be super hot for my Patreon backers. In Evil Inc After Dark, we’ve been … er, bouncing… between a couple storylines. In one, a new heroine named Fireworx is introduced — and starts living up to her name. In the other, we see the other side of the storyline that has been presented on the public-facing Evil Inc comic right here on this website. Spinnerette — NSFW bonus!

This month, my Patreon backers are getting a special bonus reward — a 12-page Spinnerette story! Believe me when I tell you it’s gonna be fun…

Spinnerette, like Evil Inc, is a superhero-themed comic that has a NSFW counterpart powered by Patreon. The public-facing webcomic is free to read anytime, and it’s a fantastic story about a spider-powered superheroine. I’m a big fan. With allies like SuperMILF and villains like Greta Gravity (right), how can you go wrong?

Spinnerette gains her spideriffic super powers as the result of a laboratory accident that leaves her with four additional arms. She discovers that she has the proportional strength and agility of a spider. Sometimes, her arms act on their own when she is inattentive or lets her mind wander (especially “Bottom Lefty“, which is particularly frisky around fellow superheroine Mecha Maid).

The comic itself is fantastic, but the NSFW offshoot is where this creative team truly sparkles, in my opinion. My Patreon backers are currently experiencing that right now with a special 12-page NSFW Spinnerette story that kicks off with a toe-curling confrontation between Spinnerette and the evil Lot Lizard (cruelly cropped above) and culminates in a clandestine cuddle competition between our hero and Mecha Maid.

Heather Brown, also known as the superheroine Spinnerette, is an introverted young woman. Socially awkward and a bit of a geek, Heather is a comic book fan and a closet D&D player. After a laboratory accident at her college workplace, she is gifted with abilities similar to those of a spider, a la Peter Parker / Spider-Man. One of Heather’s running gags is that her “spider-sense” reveals only the obvious.

Comic Con International

To all my friends at Comic Con International…

As I mentioned in March, comic conventions no longer fit into my business plan for Evil Inc. There’s an awful lot of talk about how conventions aren’t about comics anymore — and there’s plenty of truth to that. But for me, this has always come down to simple math. Over the past few years, I’ve lost more money than I made at comic conventions. So I can’t justify going any longer. Moreover, the time I spend prepping and exhibiting at conventions makes me fall behind on the things that do bring money into my business — Patreon and Kickstarter.

Nevertheless, if you’re gonna be there, be sure to stop by and say hello to all of my friends who are going to be working their asses off to bring you cool things.
