The Guigar Boys’ Michigan Road Trip

My boys and I drove from Philly to Michigan to visit my side of the family. This story was a true highlight from the week. Enjoy!

My uncle won $10,000 on a scratch-off lottery ticket a short while ago. He lives across the street from my parents, and he walked over to say hi while my boys and I are visiting my parents in Michigan. I shook his hand and said I wanted some of that luck to rub off on me. We had only visited for a short time when my youngest son, Max, came into the house, distraught.

Max is an budding bicyclist, and my parents’ neighbor offered the use of their bike while we were in town. Max has been riding it daily and exploring Bad Axe in the process. One of the neighborhood kids convinced Max to let him ride the bike, and as luck would have it, the rear brake broke while the kid was on it. Max felt responsible for damaging the property of the nice people who had loaned the bike, and he was pretty upset. He had the brake pad and about four washers and a couple of screws in his hand. (The kid had scooped up the pieces that fell on the ground when the brake broke.)

Patreon-exclusive posts

For longtime readers of this blog, it’s not exactly news that much of my attention has turned to exclusive posts on Patreon. I’ve spoken about the reasons for this repeatedly — both here and in interviews like this one. But the upshot is this — after the majority of my readers installed ad-blockers, I was forced to switch from an ad-supported business model to a patron-supported one.

Once that happened, I had to concentrate on content that you readers were willing to pay for. many of you were willing to simply pledge one dollar a month to support the continuation of Evil Inc — and I was incredibly grateful for that. But it wasn’t enough to offset what I had lost to ad-blockers. After many unsuccessful attempts — the all-ages comic Arch Bros, the PG-13 version of Courting Disaster, single-panel bonus comics, PDF collections, etc. — I landed on the content that you were willing to back financially — NSFW content.

After the first month of offering NSFW content (a grand total of two posts, I might add), my Patreon support tripled. The following month, as I added more content, that new number doubled. And my patreon support has, thankfully, risen steadily ever since.

Since that first month I offered NSFW content — April 2015 — I have been determined to be worth of the support that my Patreon backers were giving me. And that meant setting a goal to make one exclusive post for every day in each month. The graph below shows the results. Since April 2015, I have made about 800 Patreon-exclusive posts. And nearly 50% of those were NSFW.

The bottom line is this: I want to earn your support — whether it’s one dollar or ten. And I’m determined to put the work in to make that happen. If you’re not interested in NSFW content, your $1 Patreon pledge means that I will continue to be able to offer the PG-13 version of Evil Inc here on this site. And that’s something I want very much to continue. And if you are interested in the NSFW content I’m offering on Patreon, you can bet that I’m working hard every week to make that pledge worthwhile for you.

Either way, if you’re a Patreon backer, I want to thank you for helping to keep all of these publishing efforts alive. Now, more than ever, I simply couldn’t do it without you!

My response: That would be Mixtape. His superpower was the ability to duplicate up to three superpowers from any superhero on the planet before going into battle. He could change this mix, of course, but only from his headquarters in his upstairs bedroom. He preferred to choose only one power from three different heroes — he considered sampling two or three powers from the same hero to be unseemly. These powers tended to degrade and get weaker with each use… until he got a chance to create a new mix. He was a founding member of the Age-of-Legal-Consent Titans, and worked with them for several years before being eviscerated by talons of the prehistoric pillager, the Pterrorist. His teammates worked feverishly to save his life, but, alas… no one had a pencil.

There’s a lot going on over at the ol‘ Patreon page this month. The first of TWO full-page Evil Inc After Dark episodes has already posted. It features a new superhero, Carbon Copy, who can transform himself into anyone he touches. After Phenomenal Lass — er— convinces… him to cover for her on monitor duty, Elastic Man walks into the Justice Ltd. headquarters and starts putting the moves on his favorite cantilevered cutie (or so he thinks). Meanwhile, in the other Evil Inc After Dark storyline, Fireworx (below) is offered an unusual gift from her husband.

Patreon is rolling out a new layout feature, and that’s great news for Evil Inc readers. (It’s not available to all Patreon creators yet.) Here’s what you can do to make the most of it. First things first: If you don’t like the new look, just look for this helpful widget at the top of the left-hand column to change it back.

The new layout

In short, Patreon has added a thumbnail view to its interface, So now, instead of the usual long-scrolling list of posts, a user is presented with a grid of thumbnails…

You can use the tags — also in the left-hand column — to display only the pages you’re interested in reading right now. Each Evil Inc After Dark storyline, for example, has its own tag. You can also isolate only the NSFW Courting Disaster cartoons with a tag. I have well over 135 tags for you to use.

Now that you’ve filtered your results, go to one of those thumbnails and hover your cursor over the image. It should turn into a magnifying glass. If you click, you’ll get an extra-large image to read. When you’re done, click the X in the upper right-hand corner, and you’re back to the thumbnails. Go to the next page, repeat, and so on.

You can read the entire series without re-loading pages and clicking all over the place!

I think it’s a big improvement!
